Chicago 2018 show pipes

Post by joegoat » Tue Jan 02, 2018 8:58 am

I'd like to make some pipes to take to Chicago with me this year. I'll pray to get a part of a table at the preshow because I'd hate to be trapped behind a table all day Saturday and miss the company if the CPSer's who make it to the show. Hopefully this table section is between two guys that only have tubs full of assorted 70's and 80's era, mass production pipes for $5 or $10 apiece. That may put a little more shine on my pipes.
Anyhow, I have several shapes that have been kicking around in my mind for months now, but I need a few more. Does anyone have a shape they'd like to see me attempt?

I'd say make a Poker but then I'd just want to buy it and then you wouldn't have it for Chicago. See? I've been no help.

The Dublin. A straight-forward, proper Dublin. None of this fancy contemporary or freehand crap, but a real, straight, Dublin of traditional shape and proportion.

Why, you ask? It's a challenging shape, it looks darned refined, and it's the shape of the true gentleman. I think your monkeys would support me on this.

A prince. Always been a favorite of mine. I won't be at the show so you will have to send it to me to gain my approval.

If you wish to showcase your skill, you may want to take a slightly canted billiard. Like this one:

Image

If you notice, the shank is as long as the bowl is tall and the slight cant adds to the degree of difficulty. It is, IMO, a good shape to demonstrate one's ability.

It sounds like the consensus is for you to exhibit your skill with traditional shapes.

I agree, but would add that if there is a unique shape original to you, or an interesting JAG take on a traditional shape, you should add that as well to show yourself not just as the capable pipemaker you’ve become but as an original new “voice” as well.

If the pipe world had an award (as College athletic teams almost always do) for Most Improved Player, you’d get my vote. Your growth has been incredible.

Whatever you make, don't let Durango handle it, he'll just break it.

Like some have mentioned - traditional shapes with particular attention to the bits. I'd make them all straight too. Black ebonite. No embellishments. Medium size.

- Billiard, diamond shank bulldog, Dublin, prince, lovat.

I predict that 2018 will be the year of the traditional, straight, diamond-shanked bulldog.

In order to assure that unbroken JAG pipes are available for display in Chicago, I agree with your recommendation.

Photos of the pipes would, however, be much appreciated.

Bowl on the smallish side of medium, don't forget. We're talking tradition, here.

I have a feeling that you could break a picture of a pipe by just looking at it on your computer.

If we're posting possibilities for a future POY in the form of a straight, diamond shank bulldog . . .

I rather like the Peterson take on it in the 150. The older pipes with the narrower button appeal to me very much. The Rosslare is the newer style stem. The Donegal has the old style stem:

Please note, I've had the older bulldog for more than a year and not broken it.
Yet.

Traditional shapes sell. Sculptural shapes draw attention. I typically try to make one over-the-top pipe that draws attention and sets you apart from the rest in the room then as many popular traditional shapes as I can get done. I typically price the sculptural pipe high so the rest look like a bargain. The only shape that I've never had problems selling is the bulldog shape.

I think a traditional bulldog - even more so than a billiard - has to be exactly right to appeal. The shaping and grooving of the bowl has to be right. The shank has to be right. And of course all the proportions and relationships, and fit and finish have to be right. *If yours isn't right, there are a dozen on the next row that are.

I'm sure Rusty would agree with me.

*Not 'yours' as in Wayne's, but 'yours' as any pipe maker.
