Billiard...

Post by JMG » Tue Mar 06, 2018 4:43 pm

I'm not super pleased with this one. It's not bad, but I didn't check some boxes that could have made pretty decent. It's too cylindrical and the bowl/shank transition is a bit to sharp on the sides. I decided to go with a horn stem. For the life of me I can't seem to get the color striations to show up, but it's pretty when the light hits in the right ways. The bite zone is a thicker than the 4mm I would typically go for since it's horn...probably a lot like the Ropp horn stem pipes. While the grain is nothing to write home about the briar is almost completely flawless. It has one really small pit. Given how nice it was and the horn stem, it just seemed to call for a natural finish. 5 3/4" long, 1 7/8" tall, 3/4" chamber.

That's a nice pipe. Yes it is. I can see that it might be a little more in the way of a pot, but that's just part of being hand made. Good job. Is that about a Group 4?

I like the rim.

I've never really known Dunhill sizes. I would say this not a large pipe, but a husky medium...?

Stop it. Don't write your work off like that.

If you really don't like it then don't stop working on it. You can bring the diameter at the rim in a skosh for more of a barrel shape if you think it's too cylindrical. You can soften up the bowl/shank transition by going a little further in to the bowl at the bottom with a larger radius file or sandpaper on a 1/4" dowel.

I like what you have, but if you don't, then keep at it. Worst that can happen is you chase it too far and end up scrapping the stummel, but hey, it's just a pipe.

Yer killing me. Even better. Not that the other one was bad. I thought it was nice. Coach Fred knows how to motivate.

Did the tweaking bring out more pits?

When it gets stained and buffed, please post photos.

Can you post close ups of the bit and button?
