I flippin filed the stem too thin. Apparently that's a thing I do a lot lately.

While I'm being helpful here's a quick tip to avoid filing your stems too thin: don't take off so much material.

I think a contrasting would make it look super blotchy. It has one spot with a lot of grain and then other places that are almost completely bald.
Yeah, I see where you're coming from. The black finish would be sharp if it had something lighter to break up the black between the stem and stumel.
