I changed up my drilling technique after that one. This time I stopped an inch short of the end with the taper drill and made the slot deeper. I'm now back to where I started today. Ah well! I need more practice with files and sandpaper.

That's what I did as well. The diameter of the stem was so small that it didn't really allow me to leave much thickness on the barrel side of the blade without the slope looking too insignificant. So, I drilled more like what you described.

Glad to know I'm on the same wavelength as you! You make some lovely pipes! I started fooling with the squat tomato stummel you had in the box of shop scraps I bought off of you. I'm thinking you tossed it aside for being drilled a tad off center. I think I'll do a bamboo shank on it and call it the zombie pipe.

Screwing too many things up the last day or two in the workshop. Quite perturbed. Wife had her 5th surgery today since we've come back Stateside today. So, making some late night handkerchiefs. Hard to screw them up...

Oh an acorn, this is looking very interesting. I can wait to see how you finish this.

I am not blowing smoke (well actually I am as I have a pipe in my mouth right now) but for a guy who keeps saying he is not a real pipe carver you sure do some impressive pipes and to my eye get all the measurements and angles spot on.

There are some really tricky lines on that pipe - the back of the bowl from top to heel, the way the shank has diverging and complimentary curves top and bottom, the diameter of the stem at the joint matches up to the imaginary continuation lines of the shank, the collar on the stem is just a tick larger than the ring on the shank - and you've nailed them all. At least to my eye. So far.
