Re: In the works...
First coat of Danish oil is on. Will probably be another four coats and five days before it gets finished. Shout out to Fiddlestix for giving me some tutelage on this process.

Re: In the works...
So when the oil is done then you'll just buff? Or will you do a coat of wax still?

Re: In the works...
I'll go through a quasi-regular routine, just much lighter. This finish is supposed to be a lot more durable.ReverendThom wrote: ↑Fri Mar 30, 2018 8:30 pmSo when the oil is done then you'll just buff? Or will you do a coat of wax still?

Re: In the works...
It's not great, but it's better...baby steps. With Mark Price's tutelage I tried a Danish oil finish for the first time. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. The back of the stummel (stem side) has some flaws, but I don't have the means to sandblast anymore and I just couldn't bring myself to rusticate this one. I still need to clean up the chamber and stamp it, but I'm calling this one "done".

Very cool! Horns don't really appeal to me, but this one does. Especially with that bend
Do you see Danish oil becoming more of a go to for you? Any benefits over wax?

Re: In the works...
It's still waxed. After letting the oil cure I did a really light buff with white diamond and then carnuba and ended with a flannel buff. I don't know if it will be my go-to method. I'll need to try it out on a few more, but I was pleased with the initial results.ReverendThom wrote: ↑Thu Apr 05, 2018 9:45 pmVery cool! Horns don't really appeal to me, but this one does. I have never looked at a horn pipe and thought that I would smoke that . . . . UNTIL NOW!

Re: In the works...
That came out very nicely! The bend on the stem is good, I think. It's not over-bent, though a gentler bend wouldn't have been wrong either. I'd love to see you experiment more with this shape.

Re: In the works...
Working outside-the-box for me on this one. I got the first stem too thin at the bit so I am having to make a new one. This is some bamboo root that I dug up here in MS. I carried the rustication into the first bit of the bamboo. Also, because it is so curved I drilled through one of the nodes to make it work and will be making a decorative node to cover the hole and will probably do that to the rest of the nodes. I don't know...we'll see.

Re: In the works...
Working on a chubby bent billiard. The grain isn't too impressive. It does have some nice rings, but I no longer have the means to sandblast. Since the grain isn't anything special I am either going to rusticate it or just do a naked finish maybe. Honestly I don't want to go to too much trouble with the stain since the grain is just ok. One side of the bowl and the back has a pretty big bald area. There is a pocket of nice straight grain, but it overall it would be pretty blotchy, I think, stained. So...what do you guys think?

I think it needs a contrast stain.
