This acrylic is hard as petrified dinosaur turds (which I assume are really stinking hard). It's quite the challenge to get the barrel of the stem and the shank completely the same diameter. I've had to basically file the barrel separate from the shank because each one's hardness is so different. Calling it quits for night. The "flaw" (discoloration) may blow completely out when blasted and all this will be for not, but it's practice I guess. I've learned things. 1. I think this is a better shaped billiard for me, so that's good. 2. I don't like making flush fit stems from this acrylic.

Your billiard is looking good! It is the hardest shape to master, IMO.

Taking my time. Trying to make a decent looking stem. Saddle stems hate me...or I hate them...or both.

I'm really hoping that flaw doesn't blast through. I know it doesn't show up in the pics, but this ring grain is sick. Also, this stem is my best saddle so far, but this clear/translucent material is impossible to photograph (by impossible, I mean impossible for me who is a know-nothing).

JMG, do you make any pipes while you are in PNG? Do you use any local materials?

When I took up pipe smoking again, I made a few, just wooden ones, but one of them (made out of a kwila sledgehammer handle with a wooden stem), smokes really nice, and I kind of dig the rustic, post apocalyptic look of it. The nice thing about them was that I could whip one out in an hour or two, so they were easy to replace when they eventually burned up. I've been experimenting recently with lining them with a 50/50 mix of egg white and chalk to see if I can get a little more life out of them.

Obviously not in anywhere near the same league as the ones you turn out!!

I rarely have time to fart when I'm in the tribe, so no pipe making, unfortunately. I wish I had the tools and time to do it there though. I always greatly miss the hobby while I'm not Stateside.

And we miss your mastering the hobby while in the field. But you are doing more important things than making briar dust in PNG.

I'm sure that's true, but even spending just a little bit of recreational time in a hobby he enjoys will help him to last longer over here.

On the other hand, if JMG has decided that this is the sacrifice that he has to make, I understand that, too. For me it was guns. I love to shoot, like collecting antique firearms, but I can't do it over here (aside from the lack of funds that I could justify on such a hobby in my current profession, guns are also very nearly completely illegal here)--for me it was one of the sacrifices I was called to make when I was called to PNG.

Yeah, "nearly". It's certainly possible to buy one, but the lisence fees are too high, in my opinion. I find it absolutely astonishing that the "raskols" get around the whole problem of firearms acquisition by BREAKING THE LAW! The NERVE of those guys!

I wish the blast could have been deeper, but the flaw and size of the pipe just wouldn't allow it. That is no slight to the one that blasted it for me (I had to outsource) I should have left more meat. However, I'm happy overall. And as far as billiards go, this is a better one for me. Can't sell this pipe due to the flaw, but I sure look forward to smoking it...after I stain and finish it that is.

Trying to finish up one last pipe before everything gets put away. Actually most everything IS packed, just a couple bare essentials left out (spent all day taking stuff to storage...Side Note: Nearly every single thing we own here in the States fits in an 8'x10' storage pod...with some leftover space) Anywho, I hope I don't screw this stem up. If so, I'll have to put the stummel up and finish it next time I'm in the States. I'm liking this pipe so far. I like the aubergine color of the stem with the stummel.
