Oh, my stars. I haven't laughed that hard for years. While I was growing up on the PA side, my father was a teacher in WVA. They used to compete for lowest salaries with the Tennessee teachers.

I was in WV through 8th grade.

Thank God we left.

For purely personal reasons, I'm hoping Madison. You'd like the town, believe it or not.

It's a fair sized town. I'm sure you could go weeks at a time without bumping in to Del.

It's not that, believe it or not, although I have to admit my schadenfreudensenses are tingling at the prospect. I think a taste of northern big ten factory university culture would be useful to your academic careers.

Hmmm... maybe I've been out of academia too long (or not... academia moves glacially slow).

No can do. I have a sister who lives in Denver. Unlike me, she likes to argue about theology and politics.

There is some political BS and she still hasn't passed--yet. In short, one member of the committee is fighting with her adviser. All of her adviser's students have required re-writes or flat out failed in the one small section that this committee member is in charge of. Nancy has to re-write 2 pages which normally would be a "pass with revision" but the political BS...

However, everyone is encouraging he to apply as if she has passed so it has begun. She has applied at Madison-Wisconsin and Auburn, Portland State, Oregon, and Oregon State are next. Please remember her in you prayers.

And with any luck, the bus would break down on Wolf Creek Pass and your sister would be stranded in Pagosa Springs and never make the trip again! Denver is practically in a foreign country. We're much closer to Albuquerque.

Mrs. Durangopipe had the same problem with her oral exams (in the med school at CU)--a grudge between one insecure faculty member and the rest of her committee was argued with my wife as the pawn. After the orals she thought she'd failed because the questioning was so hostile.

Most of the faculty later apologized (except for the professor with an axe to grind). She was awarded her degree and never looked back.
Academic politics are the worst, as you know, because the consequences matter so little.
