Student in avalanche school dies in avalanche

Post by durangopipe » Mon Jan 07, 2019 11:43 am

A 40 year old man from Longmont died in an avalanche this weekend while taking an avalanche safety course with the Silverton Avalanche School.

They were on a south-facing backcountry slope at 13,000’ when the group released an avalanche. A secondary sympathetic release hit the group. All but he were extracated without injury, but he was buried over 8’ deep and died.

There is no information yet about whether he is married or has children.

I know all involved are devastated - including the guide responsible for the group.
Keep them in your prayers.

When I saw the initial press release on the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website yesterday, before many details were available, I feared it might have been one of my students, many of whom take that course. I’ll be dealing with that concern all winter, as I always do.

Tagging onto Steve's thread. My nephew narrowly missed the avalanche in Taos today. He was there minutes after it happened. Dog patrols have recovered some folks, but I hear it's bad.

Glad your nephew is okay, Tim.
