Post by JMG » Mon Mar 02, 2015 12:34 pm

Mike wanted me to make a video tutorial for sewing a pipe sock. I hate videoing myself but you do for Coco. So, here it is:

Good video.

I haven't seen work that good since I once visited the Lurleen B. Wallace Development Center in Decatur, Alabama.

I'm using MrsCoco's secondary machine, which is a cheap Brother. Two layers of felt and fabric is clearly pushing its upper limits. Time to attach a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton...

Oh, I've got a big production company that handles that sort of stuff.

Where's the shorthand video. In about 1/32 of the time. I ordered 32 on eBay for the same price it would cost me to try to figure out where to get drawstring at. Or drive to the nearest wal Mart.

But I guess if I was ambitious enough. Or was willing to admit to my wife I could use a sewing machine. I'd give it a try.

Thanks for the tutorial.

Or. If you're an alcoholic. Just use all those crown royal socks you have lying around.

I can tell that it's not ILM - no elves nor dwarfs nattering at you.

This is good stuff. Pipe socks, and actually using them, is the one thing that you can do to preserve and protect the finish of your pipes over the decades. It really makes a difference. And many of the commercial ones are not as good as the ones that you can make for yourself (or if your wife is handy with a sewing machine...). Plus the range of interesting fabrics and quilted materials makes socks a nice accessory.

Next time, smile a little more, and get the makeup people to put a little a makeup on you and I'm pretty sure we can get you a rich husband. 8O

You need a bigger sewing machine eg a Husqvarna or a Bernina etc.

My first few attempts, all felt-lined:

Image

I managed to make the $100, third-hand Brother machine work okayish with a walking foot. Most sewing machines are made to sew thin dress fabric. To sew thicker stuff like canvas, leather, or denim, it helps to have a big machine. The consensus seems to be that regular machines lack the power and gearing to properly sew man fabrics, and will wear quickly under such loads.

If you say that you want to sew "anything," you will need at least two machines. To sew multiple layers of canvas or leather through, say 6 ounce, you will need a powerful compound walking foot machine, preferably with a servo motor to control speed. Something like this. Thicker leather (like for a gun holster) will require something like this, and no, it will not sew thinner stuff.

Most of us can't afford to buy a real machine for the tiny bit of sewing we may do. For us, the old metal Singers made in the 40's and 50's might be the best option for canvas or soft, thin leather, perhaps with an aftermarket walking foot and a 16 or 18 needle installed. They are cheap enough that if you kill it you won't feel too bad. You can make up for the machine's lack of power by turning the wheel by hand when you encounter thicker material (I learned this trick from MrsCoco's grandmother, who hand cranks her Bernina at the hem overlap on blue jeans).
