Once I hit the slough of relight and bitterness I just stop, pick out the dottle, and put it on a tissue in my right middle desk drawer. Then, on Friday afternoons, I pack a pipe with the week's dottle and light up. If I'm feeling lucky I'll add to the experience with a cheap beer and a Moon Pie.
Eek.

But I'll say this. You are resourceful

I have over 11 pouches of John Bull,... some rather good tobacco that claims to be "A Proper English." Great flavor and well sealed in mylar.

It's a fine ribbon shag cut. And even though I let it dry some, I have to be very careful making sure the bottom of the bowl is packed lightly. Not to invites problems if I tamp too firmly. Or smoke too quickly, for John Bull has great taste.

I also wanted to say again that kitchen matches may be the ideal way to light a pipe, for the flame temperature of a kitchen match is much lower than butane lighters. But I do understand the convenience of a lighter, especially if there is wind, or the pipe smoker is on the move, doing things.

Most all of my bowlfuls are at dedicated times where I know I can relish the ritual, and the entire experience. And I know for some this might not always be practical.

There you have it.
The ritual.

Few things either as wonderful--or as unique to each individual.

Well put, Goose.
