Hats

Post about everything from carrying a handkerchief to manly skills (sharpening a pocket knife, etc.) to product reviews of items that may have slipped under our radar (e.g. - Grandpa's Pine Tar soap). No threads on anything "new" unless it harkens to old-fashioned sensibilities and ideals.

I have the urge to get a new hat. It always happens this time of year when fall is approaching. The problem is that I should have thought about this months ago because I've been wanting custom one from Black Sheep Hatworks, but that wait.

Something in this kind of felt, with a larger brim and thinner ribbon. Maybe a ostrich sweatband if he can do it.

Didnt Ralph from that one show wear one of these?
No. Ralph wore a hachimaki.

I meant the other Ralph, from that one show, the vintage show.

I caught my dad eyeing my bluegrass green Stylemaster yesterday, now I'm back down to just one Akubra, a straw, and cool weather is here. I did a little internet shopping at lunch and found that my tastes exceed my budget. I may need to sell a pipe.

Hats

Post by JohnnyMcPiperson » Fri Oct 19, 2018 2:41 am

I’m to short to rock a fedora... it just doesn’t work proportionally IMO, but I may have to look into a brimmed hat again, for now I’ve got my Irish wool cap, it’s in need of a dry clean though...

Wearing a 1940s era Caxton today. I've probably posted this one somewhere before. It's worth mentioning again.

Dense yet malleable and light weight soft fur felt with nice attention to detail. I love the way these old hats just take a dent. The subtle color variation in the felt and trim is outstanding. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Boy, would I love a hat like that! Where do you even buy these anymore?

The Bay. The prices keep going up and you have to be very careful. Go by the photos more than the description. And ask for opening length and width size to double check size claims. (Length in inches + width in inches) / 2 = U.S. hat size (average diameter). Take note of the shape of your head. A lot of people are long oval, meaning that they are longer front to back than the average person. If your head is noticeably egg shaped, you are long oval.

Also, you can buy a severely beaten vintage hat and have it refurbished. Fur felt is a wonderfully resilient material. The felt alone would be worth the price. Just watch out for moth nibbles. Nibbles are hard to mitigate in a refurb. This is a vintage Penney's Marathon I had refurbished by Northwest Hats (I posted about it a few pages back):

I wish I had before photos to show you what is possible. It had dirt, sweat, and grease stains galore. No moth nibbles, though.

By "The Bay" you mean Canada's "Hudson's Bay Company?" I thought they were all closed now.

I just did a search on thebay.com and saw mostly toques, fur hats, and caps. The fedoras all seem to have the small brim, and I have a couple of those already-- I definitely like the big brim from those old 40's hats!

Now you're talking. Hats are awesome and should never have gone out of style. Still have a whole stack of Stetsons and Resistals and ball caps. Look at any old photo of street scenes before 1940 and all the men had their hats on. They were as necessary as trousers. This picture was taken in 1905 in my hometown of Greenville, NC.

I've decided my next hat will be a Stetson Open Road. Warm weather is upon us so straw will be the first choice, but a nice 6x silverbelly fur is also on the list.
