The OFG Knife Sharpening System

Post about everything from carrying a handkerchief to manly skills (sharpening a pocket knife, etc.) to product reviews of items that may have slipped under our radar (e.g. - Grandpa's Pine Tar soap). No threads on anything "new" unless it harkens to old-fashioned sensibilities and ideals.

Nice set up man.

If you like, you can send me all of your knives and I'll sharpen them for you on the EPA.

I keed, by the looks of your set up and the waterstones, I'm betting you can freehand pretty dang good!

I discovered only recently that I could keep our knives admirably sharp using the bottom of any ceramic coffee mug as a whetstone. It works.

My mom's mom always did that. She was a farmer's wife. Country folk usually had good and cheap ways of doing things. Ceramic mugs and a steel are about all I use, unless I've let a blade get very dull; then I have a diamond whetstone.

This Edge pro will get yer blades SHARP.

I just touched up a well used working/user Benchmade 550BK-1 griptillian with a CPM-20CV blade on 400, 600, 1000 and then a polishing tape.

HAIR SPLITTING SHARP in only a few strokes.

This is a hard steel.

Get some!

After dozens and dozens of sharpenings I'm now having trouble with stones not being the same thickness which is making things more complicated.

There is a formula to use when transitioning between stones of differing thickness but I can't find the damn thing right now.

There is a stone leveling kit available that I'll be needing in the future.

Fingers can still bleed after I'm done sharpening but not as fast as they used to.

I use a Japanese 800/6000 water stone and it does a satisfactory job; really sharp.

I'm using a Japanese water stone, 400/6000 and it gives me a satisfactory really sharp edge. First time I've heard of Edge Pro Apex by Jocose. Awful pricey, though!

Shaving sharp blades still abound!

Along the way I've learned a few tricks to compensate for different stone thicknesses resulting in scalpel sharp blades every time.

I've polished many edges with up to 2000 Grit Polishing Tapes.

The 3000 grit tapes and higher have gone unused so far. I really don't see a need for them as of yet. I can shave my chest after using just the 1000 grit stone, let alone the polishing tapes.

Edge Pro Apex.

Get some!
