Re: The Knife of Man's Desiring
Restoration project begins. The folding knives are heirlooms from my late father-in-law, a boy scout knife of unknown make and a case knife. We shall see.

Re: The Knife of Man's Desiring
I own more Barlow's than any other folding knife but they're too large for EDC. I have them in my tool boxes, glove boxes, and junk drawers though because they're serious working knives. I have one that's 8" when open.

I did hear, the other day, that the bird's the word.
That is all.

Take a look at Rough Rider stuff. Very good quality for the price.
I have a Barlow knife from RR that has bone scales that cost me maybe 10$

Re: The Knife of Man's Desiring
Oh man. That's gorgeous, Bloodhound. Same as the Remington R1 (made by Camillus) but with that nice L.L. Bean special engraving.
It's gone now. Did you buy it? (Hope so!)
If you're looking for a folding upland knife with a bird hook, Hugo, the choices are getting slimmer. Of those still relatively easy to find: The Case has been discontinued and people selling them are asking higher and higher prices for them. The Remington/Camillus (R1) is usually available on the auction sites. The Boker is a beautifully made knife and readily available. I had one, but I gave it to a friend in New England who coveted it. It was too slim in the grip for me to use comfortably.
A green handled R1 (photo off the internet):
The Boker (Orvis has them, but they're also available with a Boker shield - photos off the internet):

There's also the Puma SGB (the wood handled knife in the photo below), which is a very good knife and a terrific value. The blade is Solingen German steel. The entire SGB line is assembled in Asia to keep the price down. Amazon and Optics Planet usually have them if you can't find them locally.
I'm quite fond of mine.

Let us know what you get!

How well do those hooks work? Never tried one.

Too fancy for my blood. I've never used a gut hook, being possessed of a finger, but that's pretty.
I was thinking a fixed blade, but that is pretty.

There are lots of beautiful, practical bird and trout knives out there.hugodrax wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 6:25 pmToo fancy for my blood. I've never used a gut hook, being possessed of a finger, but that's pretty.

Post a photo when you decide. We’d love to see it.
Depends on what you intend to do with the bird.
If I intend to pan fry the bird after dipping it in milk and flour, I skin them and open them up along the spine and completely clean them out. But if I want to pluck and roast a bird in the skin the gut hook works great for taking out guts, especially with smaller birds.
Really handy if you want to gut quail in the field (which, in all honesty, I haven’t done in ages).
Me too. I’m not buying another fountain pen. My son spoiled me!Bloodhound wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2019 1:10 pmThis is worse for my wallet than the Fountain Pen thread
I don’t have a Remington R1. I’m looking at them now.

Re: The Knife of Man's Desiring
Here's a knife my dad made recently. I'll probably never use it because of the dramatically up-swept point. That, and it weighs like 5 lbs. Still cool to have.

Yeah the blade is a bit much, however, how cool is it that your dad made it. Something really nice to pass down.

Re: The Knife of Man's Desiring
I dunno ...
It’s a nice combination of traditional hunter and sharpfinger skinning knife. I can see it being pretty useful. In any event, it’s gorgeous. Your dad makes a helluva knife, FredS.
