That's my grandson's favorite scary movie. I'll bet I've watched it with him 30 times or more. Even when he was only 4 or 5 years old he would ask to watch it, then hide behind me the whole time.

Still scares the crap outta me. Not every Carpenter film hits all the beats, but when they do, he's right on.

I never really thought of it as a horror movie, until I saw it ranked as #1 scariest movie of all time.
JAWS
Maybe for it's time it was scary but by today's standards it's a snore-fest.
My son was about 17 when we had this same discussion, and I said Jaws was a good one. He started in with, the special affects were poor and it was a plastic, kind of a shark looking thing and that by the standards of todays movie making it was outdated and just looked hokey...this was back in the day of the video stores, so I went and rented it and one Saturday night we watched it, just he and I in the basement family room. He jumped several times and when the guys head came into the view in the hole in the boat, he practically levitated off the floor. He admitted that for an old hokey movie, it was still pretty scary...

Sure, it has some scary moments, but to me it's really lacking a persistent sense of dread. Maybe it's because the monster was restricted to the water. It's victims had to go into its domain rather than being pursued in their own. Just stay out of the water and everyone is safe. Compared to, say, aliens in your ship or shapeshifters in your bodies or a pack of raptors in your safari park, Jaws just feels ho-hum. And listening to the old sailor tell a story for what seemed like 20 minutes was almost enough to make us turn it off.

“Get Out.”
My wife and I were freaked out from the first scene.

That was a pretty good movie.
