The 416 Fire North of Durango

Post by durangopipe » Fri Jun 01, 2018 3:07 pm

This is the photo I took with my cell phone from campus on the way home from the range this morning - at around 11:45. The town of Durango is directly below me. Our house is in a valley on the far side of the ridge, beneath the summit of Animas Mountain, even with the left edge of this photo. The fire is currently about 10 miles north of our house and moving away to the north-northwest. This photo is looking north.

I just took these from our front yard.
Smoke from the fire, viewed to the northeast:

Other than the smoke from the fire, the sky is absolutely cloudless.
Sky to the north:

Praying Praying Praying.

Can you smell smoke or is the wind pushing it away?

Going to be a long night in and around Durango.

[EDIT] Hell, it's going to be a long summer down there. It's a pretty sure bet this won't be the only fire. In fact I know there was another west of Telluride earlier this week and the Ute Park fire is burning now in N.E. New Mexico.

That memorial is in Taos, NM, nowhere near the Purgatory resort in CO.

Hov . . .

That’s down in New Mexico near Angel Fire ski area, about 150 miles southeast of us - owned by the same guy who owns Purgatory.

There's a big fire burning near there, too - the Ute Park Fire.

(Looks like we were posting at the same time, Fred.)

The wind was pushing it away during the day, Fred, but it’s supposed to come this way tonight.
Yes. It’s going to be a very dicey summer.

Continued prayers this morning. I really hate seeing those fires, and all that comes as a result of them.

BTW, reminds me of the Rev, from the California fires last year. Hope he's doing ok.

Smokey this morning but not too bad where we are. I expect it’s a lot worse in town.

We’re in a hanging valley north of town and 500’ above the Animas Valley where the smoke seems to be collecting. But I did wake up with a sore throat this morning.

My wife is going into town in a bit. I’ll have a first person report on the smoke there when she gets back.

The fire settled down last night, as they often do. We’ve heard helicopters all morning. Hopefully they’ll be able to make progress today. Although it’s supposed to get hot, it isn’t forecast to be windy.
