Fantastic service from TobaccoPipes

Post by rgcurrey » Tue Jul 09, 2019 4:56 pm

So the story goes that we were bringing the kids down to see Grandma for the week and I realized last time we were here how close TobaccoPipes.com is to her house. I planed to sneak away the first chance I got to go look at pipes and purchase a tin or two. Knowing this I only brought with me a tin of Scottish Cake that was down to the last quarter or so remaining.

Last night I noticed on their website they were open 9-5, however, "by appointment only." So this morning I called and spoke to Ben. Thus, I learned they were really only a internet store, had no retail space and the appointments were for the occasional customer buying a very high end pipe. The main reason for this is that Florida has them charge their 85% tax on anything that is pipe tobacco sold in a brick and mortar. Hence why my local B&M that sells about six different kinds of tobacco has their tins at twice the cost on line. Ben explained that I could come in and do some shopping but it would have to be with the 85% tax included. I couldn't afford that and I told him I would not be able to do that.

Feeling my pain and the fear of running out of pipe tobacco due to poor planning on my part Ben came to the rescue. Just this once I was able to order it online, however, leave instructions that this would be an instore pick up. You have no idea how happy this made me and what a great thing this is. Needless to say I ordered and with in the hour headed over and picked it up. Ben wasn't their (lunch) though I met a couple other guys working their who were super nice too. All in all they went beyond what they should have done to help a brother out.

These are good guys and will have my business in the future (well they already had it but you know what I mean).

I get charged county tax by them as I live in Florida. I can live with that, it is the 85% florida tobacco tax on pipe tobacco if you walk in a B&M to buy a tin that kills me. Local cigar place has tins of Davidoff Flake Medallions, a personal favorite, that cost $24 a tin (plus county tax of 8%). Twice the price of Tobacco Pipes, Smoking Pipes, Cup O Joes, ect.

It has been a few years since I was in Florida, 5 or so. When I was there I hit every smoke shop in Jacksonville and St. Augustine and cigars were a lot cheaper than in Colorado, but what pipe tobacco I could fins was more expensive. When I asked about it on shop owner laughed and said, "Wait till you buy some and I hit you with the loose tobacco tax..." He said the cigars are not taxed like that because they are a finished product, but pipe tobacco is considered the same as rolling tobacco and it all got lumped in together...crazy

Re: Sales tax & SmokingPipes... Every order I've placed with them has had NC 6.75% sales tax added.

I tend to find the doctrinal books often more helpful in devotion than the devotional books.... I believe that many who find that "nothing happens" when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a rough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand.

I just got back from a week long trip to Orlando. Beyond being warmer and cigar/vacation friendly, this explains why we could not find a pipe store.

Great thread. So many complain about things, and for good reason, but it's nice to see a happy fellow.
