Anyone play chess against the computer?

Post by Roadmaster » Tue May 19, 2015 9:39 pm

I've found a new way to waste time, 'Chess Titans.'

Has 10 skill levels but the chess pieces are a little hard to see.

Yes, but my interest fades quickly. I basically suck at chess. My grandson beat me the first time when he was about eight. I don't stand a chance against a machine.

The closest I currently come is playing Chess With Friends against my Dad - so we essentially always have a game going.

Can you get the computer a drunk like Alekhine?

I have played Chess Titans, yes. I've often lost. I've won a few times.

Interestingly, chess is only explicitly mentioned once in all of the plays of Shakespeare and it's in a stage direction for The Tempest, act 5, scene 1:

PROSPERO discovers FERDINAND and MIRANDA
playing at chess

And then Miranda speaks the line you quoted.

This is good information, here. Thanks.

Funny story about computer chess. When I was in high school back in the 70's, one of my best friends was a chess prodigy. It was no fun playing him because a match would only last 10 minutes. Bill was rated higher at 16 than Bobby Fisher was at the same age. So Bill heard that there was a computer chess game down at the local Radio Shack. We walked to the mall and into Radio Shack. Bill asked the salesman where the chess game was. He took us over to and telling us how good of a game it was and would probably be too hard for him. He started it up for him with a smug look on his face and stepped back. In about 7 minutes Bill had beaten the game. The salesman said, "I bet you can't do that again!" He did, beating it again in less time. Bill thanked him and walked out into the mall. I looked at the salesman, shrugged my shoulders and followed him.

Bill sounds like hot stuff. I, unfortunately, am not hot stuff. I can play a respectable, if largely ineffective, game against a human opponent. Alternatively, I can crush my six year old daughter in record time. Computerized chess was not good for my self-esteem.

For a long time I always had at least one game going with aduaria at redhotpawn.com

I may have beat him once when he was on medication... or maybe I dreamt that.

I haven't thought of Battle Chess for years. I had some good times playing that as a kid. I also used to play chess with my brother and instead of capturing pieces, you killed them and the body got left lying on the board.

I showed Mrs R how to play chess on the computer.
She can now kick my ass.
What is really embarrassing is she doesn't even know the names of the pieces.
For example she calls the bishop 'the hat dude.'

I have tried a few times in an effort to learn the game.
I was given lessons in humility only.
I learned how the pieces move as a pre-teen; 40 years later I know no more about how to play.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal

I have been humiliated by Chess Titan several times.
