I wouldn't hesitate keeping a domesticate bee hive in the yard with kids if a fence can be built around the hives. They are gentle and give plenty of warning before they get riled. Africanized bees are much easier to rile and can give a much shorter warning. I don't help my buddy with those bees yet. He keeps getting stung and so does his students who help him. But the tame European hives don't even require a bee suit most of the time.

Gas in some plastics don't work out so well. But anyway, I have several yellow jacket stories that I'll spare everyone from; besides I don't think anyone will best the image of Tuttle's dad running thru their back yard in his skivies. All I'll add is that yes, they will chase you down, from the back yard to the front yard, up the stairs onto the porch, thru the front door, and down the hall and into the bedroom. Well, at least 4 of them made it into my bedroom.
I'm old but I'm happy. (Most of the time.)

All I knew about bee keeping I learned from the Foxfire books almost tempted me into trying to set up a beegum. But living in one of the most densly populated cities in the country at the time quickly squashed any thoughts of that.

I would love to try my hand at beekeeping someday soon. A friend of mine has some hives, but I have yet to have time to learn from her. I also live in a fairly densely populated neighborhood, so it may not be feasible, anyway.

The native bees in Australia don't sting. True story. In a land where even the mammals are venomous, the bees don't sting.

Yeah, no need to burn em. A couple years ago I saw my son paying very close attention to something. As he hardly pays attention to anything I decided to check it out. "Whatcha looking at, son" said I.
"Just those bees, flying in and out of that hole in the ground" said he.
"Expletive" said I under my breath with visions of dad running in his skivvies...

There is a wire fence separating our back yard with a large field and the hole to the entrance of the nest was nearly under it. I researched some ways to get rid of them (because as fun as it would have been, I didn't think pouring gas down a hole and lighting it on fire was the best idea in a neighborhood) and found something that worked.

1) Locate the entry points (as far as I could tell, there was just the one)
2) find yerself some mesh screening, like from a window (I didn't have any on hand...)
3) wait til night
4) boil up a large kettle of water
5) pour the boiling water down the hole (ideally through the mesh screen of case of PO'd survivors)

But like I said, it did the trick. Never had a problem since.

For those who have posted that one cannot keeping bees in a city, here is a video about profitable bee keeping in NYC.

Manhattan is about as urban as one can get.

I've been wanting to get bees for a couple years now. I'm saving up for a FlowHive which is why I haven't already started. I was hoping to get started this spring but it's not looking good financially. Maybe next spring.
