A Giant Upshall Tilshead bent Dublin, w/ a chamber 1 inch wide by 2 inches deep. What a fantastic armchair pipe!

This bent billiard by Pietenpauw has become my favourite pipe. Jean says the the hardekool wood is dense and prevents ghosting due to it not being as porous as briar and I have found this to be true as I have smoked aromatics from it and then wiped it out and smoked vintage syrian or marlin flake with out a hint of the prior flavoring. To him this is a workhorse pipe and not a shiny show pipe. In fact one of the drawbacks to this wood is that it can't take a high polish and smooth finish like briar. That said he compared the finish he does get to his grandfather's pipes that were forgotten in a drawer for years with that well worn sheen. My pipe has that presence of a pipe that has been around for 100 years and yet feels like it will be good to go for the next 100 too. It is just so darn honest and comfortable I reach for it every time and have to stop myself so I will smoke the others.

Anyway, here is a link to what Jean wrote regarding hardekool wood pipes if you are interested to read more.

I really love it when the transition between cross grain and birds-eye is so clear and distinct, as on this Savinelli Deluxe Milano Canadian. To me, it almost looks fluid, like water.

Not an excellent pic from a technical standpoint, but it represents a great evening.

Stunning pipe.
Wonderful book.

McGuane is the best angling author (among other things) of recent years. And that’s saying something!
It was a time of some truly great angling authors.

Yeah, I really appreciate McGuane. I was briefly pulled away by Leeson, but upon revisiting McGuane I enjoy him even more.

The pipe is an older example of Slowtoke’s work. A beautiful and comfortable pipe with a deer antler ring.

Well, no wonder that pipe is so beautiful.

It’s funny.

Leeson is a very good writer, but I always have the feeling when I read him that his “head” is editing his heart. McGuane was not worried about what anyone might think about his writing. He just wrote. With tremendous talent. An enormous intellect. A huge heart. And utter honesty.

I spent a little time with Ted years ago. I very quickly realized that we’d never be close.

Maybe, some of that simply has to do with the fact that McGuane has lived a far more interesting life, and he's learned from it.

I doubt Ted ever even smelled horseshit, let alone stepped in it. Nick Lyons thinks the world of Ted, so maybe it’s just me.
