Do you ever do what you want to do on Father's Day?

Post by Hovannes » Sun Jun 10, 2018 9:24 am

I've long ago abdicated my Father's Day desires.
It just ain't going to happen.
Other family members needs come first, which I guess is the whole gist of the Father business anyway.
Still, all the hype about celebrating Father's Day is so tempting.
When my family asks me what I want to do on Father's Day, they can't possibly mean it.
I know this sounds like I'm ungrateful, but I don't feel that way---I'm very grateful for my family I've been blessed with and the precious few moments we do have together.
It is the time together that means a lot to me, not a new neck tie or electric gizmo or even a card. And time, it seems, is the rarest of all commodities.
I'm fortunate if I can find a few minutes to place flowers on my own father's grave at the cemetery (by myself of course, no one else has the time to spare.)

There is a lesson here somewhere. God the father wants some time with his family too, although his family is too often wrapped up in their own pursuits to visit once a week as a family.

All I want is another Father's Day tee shirt. My family knows this. If my wife wants to make pancakes, that would be nice also.

I continually frustrate my family when it comes to Father's Day and my birthday. They ask me what I want. I tell them I don't need anything. They keep prodding; I've still got nuthin'. I've tried just leaving those days off the calendar, but they usually figure that one out.

I've tried to shift my mindset from thinking of them as days about me to thinking of them as days where my family gets to do things for me that make them feel good, but I haven't managed to pull that one off. I don't know if it's because it feels like I'm trying to con myself or if it still doesn't rise to the level of needing any special attention.

I'd be perfectly happy if the only thing different on Father's Day was that they said "Happy Father's Day" to me sometime in the first half of the day, but I know that it won't be that easy. Part of me is glad that I have to work in the afternoon, but I also feel like I'm abandoning them at a time that they really want me present. How is it that a day that is supposed to honor me is such a source of frustration for me?
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

After a couple of years of asking for a sunrise breakfast together as a family they quit asking what I want.

I do what I want every day.

It will hopefully be like every other perfect Sunday with coffee, church (more coffee), front porch with a pipe and then a nice meal. That is, if it finally stops raining long enough that I can mow the back yard on Saturday.

"Yes", in answer to the question. But not always; and it will never be the same. But God willing, this coming Sunday will be special.

Yesterday, my wife and I on our drive to San Diego to check up on the DIVCO:

Mrs Thunk: “What do you want to do on Father’s Day?”

Thunktank: “I don’t know.”

Mrs Thunk: “That’s not very helpful.”

Then we drove about five more minutes without saying a word before we changed the subject.

I suspect she’ll ask me again on Saturday with a bit more urgency.

What I want to do for Father's Day is talk to my Dad.

So no, I'm not going to do what I want for Father's Day.

Its not the day that it was when the kids were younger and living at home...now they are a dad and a mom and they have other priorities. I would go fishing, but my wife wants to work around the house since we were gone last weekend and will be gone next weekend.

So quiet day...hopefully the grand daughters will call.
