Wally Frank Billiard Restoration

Post by Steve S » Tue Aug 07, 2018 10:07 am

A few months ago, somebody gave me quite a few old pipes that had belonged to his grandfather. Most of them show wear and were obviously well-used and well-loved. They were, however, pretty well taken care of. Most of them I hope to restore and sell off eventually, but this one billiard really caught my eye.

The stem was really oxidized, but the pipe was very solid. I love the long billiard shape and proportions. After a good bit of cleaning, polishing, buffing, oiling, and waxing, here's what was under all that:

The pipe is a Wally Frank, and it's marked "Sweet Root" on one side of the shank and "Pipe of the Month Club" on the other. Sweet Root was the product line, and obviously this pipe was offered to club members.

I would really like to find out how old this pipe is, but thus far I haven't found much information on Wally Frank's club on the internet. I can't even find out when the Pipe of the Month Club ceased operation, or when Wally Frank shut down. The last ad/publication I can find from Wally Frank is from the 1960s.

I haven't smoked it yet, but I will. From the looks of everything, I think it will be a fine smoker.

Well, at least you have a beautiful billiard to smoke. Nice job on the restoration.

Wally Franks are probably my favorite estate pipe brand (followed by Pipes by Lee), beauties and smoke well. Plus undermost peoples radar so when I used go to the NY/NJ pipe show could get them rather cheaply.

Hear, hear. WF is a brand I often keep my eye open for when I'm estate shopping. They will have some who's quality is well beyond their price point. And like Thoth said, Lee as well.

Very nice.

I have a similar shape WF that was rusticated in restoration, so no logo, etc, and probably lost whatever trade value it had. But it's a very good smoker, and one of my favorites.
I'm old but I'm happy. (Most of the time.)

Finally lit it up this afternoon. It smokes perfectly. I'm really glad I kept this one. I'll be keeping my eye out for more Wally Frank pipes next time I'm out browsing antique malls and resale shops.
