Benchmarks

Post by ryland » Wed Aug 08, 2018 10:29 pm

Most of us probably have a top five list and a desert island list, but what about a benchmark list? A list of blends that best represent that style of tobacco. It may not be your favorite blend for that style but it best represents that style. What would yours be?

Mine:

Virginia: Marlin Flake or Luxury Navy Flake
Virginia/Perique: Haddo's Delight
English: EMP
Aromatic: 1Q or White Rose
Burley: PA

Where do orientals fit in? English/orientals would go together I suppose. McC full English blends are the benchmark of mine, but the orientals as well. Presbyterian Mixture falls in there as well. Otherwise I can agree with the rest of your list, although the aromatic category is a tough one. Semois could fit in there as well.

I love Marlin Flake but always thought the "benchmark" for Virginia was Gawith's FVF.

I wanted a list with some controversy.

For orientals for me its their own thing and I guess my benchmark would be Poeschl Exclusiv Royal (not sure if its still around)

I'd make up your own list. If someone separates those into distinct categories it helps me understand their preferences more. I've smoked so little orientals that I can't tell you how they are different from something with Latakia.

Not saying these are my favorites, but I would select these as the current benchmarks of their respective “breeds”:

Virginia: Full Virginia Flake
Virginia/Perique: Escudo
English: My Mixture 965
Aromatic: 1Q (or Captain Black White)
Burley: Carter Hall

I like how your list has an OTC category and then a Burley category. It's interesting how each of us thinks about tobacco categories.

I had that same thought as I read through the posts. I lump VAs and VaPers as different categories, but most folks see them as two distinct types.
