Pipe recommendations

Post by ryland » Tue Sep 04, 2018 8:30 pm

If you had $200 to spend on a pipe(s), what would you get?

I'd find a CPS pipe maker.

If I had to go factory, I've been wanting a Pete Spigot 120, and if not, the 504. The finish will depend on my mood at the time, but the Sterling Natural currently blows my skirt up.

I agree with the suggestion to message some of the CPS pipemakers.

A couple of other suggestions:

You might take a peek at Mark Tinsky’s catalogue shapes.
He has some very nice pipes listed in the $200 price range.

I have 8 of his pipes (and another from his early partner) and all of them are exceptional smokers.
If you like his style, he makes a very nice, well designed and beautifully executed pipe.

If there are some pipemakers you particularly like that are out of your price range, keep an eye out for an unsmoked or lightly smoked estate. I got a beautiful Rad Davis, unsmoked estate, for less than $200 not too long ago.

Jan du Toit at Pietenpauw Pipes will make you a fine pipe to order for $200 or less. Don’t wait for one to show up on his website. Email him and ask if he’s able to make a pipe for you and discuss it from there.

If you can justify spending a little more, Wayne Teipen might be able to work with you as a member of the forum and offer you a deal. If you have one of his pipe’s (slowtoke) you'll have a Pipe by a true American Master.

That's saying somethin' right there. 8 pipes and they're all not just good, but exceptional smokers. One day I'm going to have to have me a Tinsky.

I'd put it towards wedding invitations or something like that.
