A relationship between magic and technology

Post by Nature of a Man » Tue Dec 11, 2018 5:57 pm

There's a quote from science fiction author ARthur C. Clarke which goes:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Regarding my thoughts on the relationships between magic, as in fantasy fiction, or technology, as in science fiction:

Magic seems to represent something exponentially more advanced for its day and age, to the point it would be considered more or less impossible within any contemporary understanding of our laws of physics. (Hence the term "supernatural", meaning "above natural", or so high above what is known to be natural that it couldn't be viewed as anything less than otherworldly altogether).

While technology represents something very advanced, yet at least theoretically possible within our laws of physics.

---

As an example, a flashlight is a piece of technology which allows us to create light without the need for starting a fire, an idea which may have been viewed as very advanced in times past - however an actual flashlight was not invented until the very late 19th century.

In comparison, a magician, wizard, or sorcerer from fantasy fiction may have been able to create light simply by reciting a simple magic spell, and while the result may have been similar to our "real life" equivalent of a flashlight - the mage would supposedly have been able to accomplish this feat in eras of ancient or medieval technology, and done so simply by reciting a spell learned from an ancient tome, rather than having to go through the process of inventing, patenting, and designing a flashlight.

I remember watching the Dick Tracy film featuring Madonna on TV, but that's my only experience with it.

(why is this in the blogs section?)

Much to the chagrin of DL, CS Lewis (and Tolkien) had a bit to say regarding the relationship between magic and technology (or applied science).

Both quotes from the same chapter in The Abolition of Man
Lewis wrote:“The fact that the scientist has succeeded where the magician failed has put such a wide contrast between them in popular thought that the real story of the birth of Science is misunderstood. You will even find people who write about the sixteenth century as if Magic were a medieval survival and Science the new thing that came in to sweep it away. Those who have studied the period know better. There was very little magic in the Middle Ages: the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are the high noon of magic. The serious magical endeavour and the serious scientific endeavour are twins: one was sickly and died, the other strong and throve. But they were twins. They were born of the same impulse.”

............

“There is something which unites magic and applied science (technology) while separating them from the "wisdom" of earlier ages. For the wise men of old, the cardinal problem of human life was how to conform the soul to objective reality, and the solution was wisdom, self-discipline, and virtue. For the modern, the cardinal problem is how to conform reality to the wishes of man, and the solution is a technique.”
"The Evangelium has not abrogated legends; it has hallowed them" -JRR Tolkien

"Better to die cheerfully with the aid of a little tobacco, than to live disagreeably and remorseful without." -CS Lewis

I wasn't sure of a better place for it.

That somewhat sums up my thoughts on it.

Not our fault Goose bought all the pipe tobacco.
