Double-pressed tobaccos

Post by smokadoro » Sat Jun 08, 2019 8:25 am

There's a new method invented by Russ Ouellette from Pipes & Cigars they call "double-pressed." They take flake tobacco, rub it out, let it air out a bit, then put it back into their presses again to make a crumble cake. It's supposed to smooth out the flavors much like aging.

Video introducing the process:

Sounds like a fascinating concept. The first two tobaccos using this method released to the public are in their John Cotton line. The Virginia was entered into the flake Virginia contest at the 2019 Chicago pipe show and took first place!

I ordered a tin of each out of curiosity. Can't wait to see what they're like!

After reading the press on this double press process, I have the impression that I would be hard pressed to discern the difference the pressure from the second pressing would have upon that which had been pressed only with the single press process.

I just chuckled out loud at my granddaughters dance recital. (Not during her number.).

It's 10:20 and this thing is still going.

Anyway if pressing once is good then pressing twice has got to be better.

Seems redundant but it may be worth experimentation. The Tobacco Fairy has been playing with flakes, I believe. Maybe he could experiment and compare.

You won't be able to tell the difference against wines costing 3, 4, even 5 times as much!

Yeah but the wines costing five times as much are still only 18.00 a box.

Smoked about half each of the Kentucky and the Virginia so far. They do have an extra bit of depth and complexity to them as if they were aged a couple years, which is pretty impressive for a fresh tobacco. Presentation is what I think is called a crumble cake, but it's solid like a flake plug/block. Crumbles into strips pretty easily. Recommended.

Thanks for the update. Marketing gimmick or not, if they taste good, smoke 'em!
I tend to find the doctrinal books often more helpful in devotion than the devotional books.... I believe that many who find that "nothing happens" when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a rough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand.
