Find of a lifetime.

Post by ryland » Sat Jun 08, 2019 3:59 pm

My wife and I went to an antique store today and while walking through the rows I found a pipe rack in one of the locked cabinets. I never get excited because I've seen like this are usually basket pipes that I'm not interested in owning. However, the first one in the rack was a Peterson Standard System for $40. I immediately found the store owner so I could get in and see the rest of the pipes.

There were seven pipes. Two Kaywoodies. Three Petersons. A Ruby Bari. A Dunhill. All $40 each! I inspected them all and bought everything but the Kaywoodies. They all need a good cleaning, but I just couldn't believe it. I've always wanted a Dunhill, but never thought I'd want to pay for one. Each pipe has been used and the Dunhill's white spot has fell off.

I couldn't be happier with this trip.

Some good cleaning and they will be right as rain. The Peterson System Pipe stem will not budge. Any tips on how to get that out?

I've never known a system stem to freeze in place. That one must have lain dormant a long time. Were it me, i'd swab out what I could reach of the stem with Everclear and then try smoking it. I bet that would loosen it up.
I don't always choose sig lines just to tick someone off, but when I do, it's on CPS.

You will have this find again, but there is nothing like that first time and I am so very happy you experienced it.

Congrats! I'm always looking in those kind of places but so far no Dunhill.

Once, at a big, indoor flea market in Montgomerey, AL my wife spotted some pipes and told me about them. Turned out there were two Dead Root Dunhills!...Unsmoked! From late 60's and early 70's. They were some kind of pretty and I sure wanted to keep one of them. However, money was tight at the time and I knew the good Lord had smiled on us. I bought them both for I think for either 75 bucks for both or 75 a piece (can't remember). Threw them on Ebay and one sold for $350 and one sold for $850!!! I couldn't believe it. We were able to pay some bills that needed to be dealt with and even got to treat my wife to a fancy dinner date.

Wish I could find more like that.

You're a better man than me JMG.

I would have interpreted that to mean that the LORD really wanted me to enjoy pipe smoking.

This is what happens when our wives sell our things for what we said we paid for them.

Nice!

Sometimes, if the stem is frozen, you can put the pipe in the refrigerator for 6-8 hours and the stem will loosen.
