favorite pipe thus far is....

Post by flailure » Fri Feb 14, 2020 8:04 pm

So, I have been collecting pipes for years, but only started smoking them since december. It's been absolutely wonderful, but particularly tricky to determine which pipe I like most. I'm still working on cadence and technique, favorite tobacco, packing technique, and all of the little details that can make or break a smoking session. With all that it has been particularly difficult to determine certain preferences due to some inconsistencies across the sessions, however, with that being said, I think I finally picked a favorite. Subject to change of course, but figured I would post where I'm at now and see where I will be at next year.

Anyways, here is the momentary winner:

Runner up was surprising, a well worn vauen I got for cheap on ebay, so heavily smoked the chamber is more of an oval shape than round with heavy scorching on the rim and major teeth marks. But it is one wonderful smoker. It would have been number 1 actually but it only seems to like longer cut tobacco, of which I only have a few (just started purchasing tobacco, so I don't have a lot of choices as of yet).

I'm still on the fence about any of the meers' I have collected. I don't think I have the technique to make use of the bigger apple with the huge chamber, tried a few times and just can't seem to master it. May wait until I am a little more experienced.
C. S. Lewis Quote: “A pipe gives a wise man time to think and a fool something to stick in his mouth.” Personally, I tend to gravitate towards the second option of those, but at least when my pipe is in my mouth I cannot say anything to add confirmation to that opinion.

That is a beauty.
Glad it smokes well, too.

My favorite pipe/s seem to vary some over time.

It depends on the moment, my mood, the blend, or the activity.

I’ve always sucked at these kinds of questions.

Definitely my Radice Classic Oom Paul. I've smoked that thing just about all the time since I got it a few years ago. It just seems to smoke everything so well. Unfortunately, I can't smoke it any more until I get a new stem for it as I dropped it and broke the bit off.

Okay.
I did a thought experiment:

A fast spreading fire breaks out in my office and I have to get out, but there’s time to grab one pipe.
Which one?

Put like that it was easy:

My Comoy’s Thames Bent Bulldog 409.

I smoke it outside, and cry.

Pietenpauw leadwood bent billiard. It is not my prettiest pipe by any means, not necessarily the best smoker, not the largest or smallest but it is my workhorse and there is just something about it I love. Oh, and it sings with ODF in it.

I recently had scales fall from my eyes and have switched to 9mm filter pipes. I only have two so far but more on the way. One of my 2 is a Stanwell billiard that can do no wrong unless i smoke it too fast.

If I declared a favorite, the others would grow discouraged, perhaps sullen, maybe even rebellious.
So,
they're all favorites.
