It's interesting to revisit old threads about pipes and tobacco; especially to see how tastes and opinions have changed with experience. Since posting to this thread, I've gotten rid of most of my Petersons save two due to quality issues and have purchased a lot more Stanwells. I now have 8 Stanwells that are my go to everyday pipes when I'm not smoking pipes I've made myself. The older Stanwells that were made in Denmark are better in quality but the Italian made ones can be just as good with a little work.

I cherish this large Upshall Tilshead Billiard I picked up a couple months ago for just at $100 on eBay. Tight grain, thick walls and with a wide open draw

I realize this is an old thread, however, if I had a $100 bucks to buy a NEW pipe right now (and the caveat that it was not a one of a kind deal) I would go straight to the Ropp Vintage pipes.

If I had $110 I would jump to the Ropp Algerian Supreme pipes.

Those Ropp pipes are great. I have one that I got a silent auction a few years ago that I love.

After having a few weeks with this years POY, I'm really impressed with Blatter and Blatter for this price range. I haven't seen any retail outlet selling them online though.

I have to chime in with a plug for Brigham pipes. For under $100 USD you can get a really nice looking higher grade. I have several 1 dot, couple 3 dot, and my lovely wife just got me a Muskoka in the presidential line for my birthday. The only difference in the higher grades (more dots) are finish and grade of briar, although I read that the Muskoka line are handmade.
Check them out:

And for prices in funny money; but they are available in the states:

I agree. I have 3 "Vintage" Ropp pipes that are amazing.
